THE SHORT VERSION, WHICH IS STILL TOO LONG
HE WASN'T
BORN LIKE THIS.
EVIDENCE A: THE ONLY EXISTING PORTRAITTHE TOWN OF STILL
He grew up in a town where every clock showed the same minute and every person rehearsed the same answer. He was the only one who could hear tomorrow arriving early: a buzz inside the telephone, a second voice beneath his headphones, a notification from a day that had not happened yet.
THE NIGHT THE LIGHTS BLINKED
At 2:26 a.m., the streetlights flickered out of order. For one breath, all his possible lives stood in the same room. The boy who left. The boy who stayed. The boy who never answered the phone. He stepped between them to let the others escapeβand none of the versions quite stepped back together.
WHY HE LOOKS LIKE THIS
The town's portrait artist tried to draw him before he vanished again. Every time the pencil lifted, his expression had already changed. So the artist used a single impatient white line on the only blue sheet that did not shimmer. The eyes look in different directions because they remember different tomorrows. The outline wavers because he is never fully in one frame.
THE NAME STUCK
When someone called him βunstable,β he almost laughed. βI'm fine,β he said. βIt's the frame that can't hold still.β Nobody believed him. The drawing survived. The name did too. Now he carries ordinary thingsβa beanie, an earring, a dead phoneβto remind himself which life he is in.
